Op-Doc

With the Black Lives Matter movement at large I was searching for op-docs to further my understanding of what racism is like for a black person and what they go through on a daily basis. I looked, and looked, and looked; then, I came across, A Conversation With Black Women on Race. This op-doc amplifies black women’s feelings and experiences with race.
This video had many different black women speak about their personal experiences and opinions but one point of view stood out to me the most; she said that race is multilayered. From that statement I took away that here's more to racism than the racial slurs and violent acts. Growing up these women experienced racism in a way I never thought of before. Adults around them would pick at their differences like hair texture. One of the women said that when she was younger she wanted to be in the school play. All of the other girls were told to curl their hair and she was wondering why her hair was in "weird lumps," and not doing pretty things like the other girls. She was told hat her hair can't do those things.
Many of the women felt as if they weren't good enough because of their race and gender. One women felt as if the adults around her were telling her that hair isn't good enough and their going to make sure everyone notices that she is black and the other girls aren't. These women not only get oppressed because of their race but because they are women too. I never realized how badly black women were treated by others. This video is a real eye-opener into being a black woman.

  2. I like your perspective on this op-doc Jade. You talk about the experiences of the black women from the video and you put them into your own words. It's very amazing how when searching and searching for an op-doc, you chose " A Conversation with Black Women on Race" You could of chose any other op-doc and you chose this. I congratulate you because not a lot of people will choose a topic about race, because it's simply too touchy. You had a wonderful response.
